The EU Gateway Programme to Korea, was officially launched at a press conference in Seoul on 11 February 2009 by Mr. Karel Kovanda, European Commission, Deputy Director General of External Relations, and Mr. Eric Hamelinck, European Commission, EU Gateway Programme Manager and well attended by the Korean press and numerous Ambassadors of EU member states.
“The European Union’s Gateway Programme in Korea is launched at an auspicious moment since the EU and Korea are now within reach of the conclusion of a landmark free trade agreement” said Mr. Karel Kovanda.
Mr. Eric Hamelinck said that the “program will benefit not only European companies, but also Korean firms which will be able to develop profitable relationships with select EU companies while exploring business and investment opportunities in the Republic of Korea”.
Building on the success of the Gateway Programme to Japan, the Korea launch aims to strengthen business cooperation between the EU and Korea. As Korea is the European Union’s 4th largest trading partner, enormous opportunities abound for EU and Korean companies.
This year, three European delegations will visit Korea to participate in exhibitions on construction and building technologies, environment and energy-related technologies, and healthcare and medical technologies.
